Book Summary:

Forming bonds in a time of war It's the summer of 1943, and for twelve-year-old Celie Marsh the war seems awfully close to her coastal Massachusetts home. She worries about bombs and submarines, and about her big brother, who can't wait to go off and fight. Her little brother doesn't seem to need her anymore, and her best friend has moved away. When her father brings Charley, a monkey, home from work one day, Celie finds the comforting companion she has been missing. But more upheaval is in store: irritating Joey Bentley moves in with his crabby grandmother next door, her mother takes a job building warships, and worst of all, Charley proves to be too wild for Celie to manage. A near disaster forces Celie to make a heart-wrenching decision that teaches her painful lessons about friendship, family, and the meaning of love. This tender novel about relationships, based on the author's mother's experience, is elegantly crafted and suffused with warmth, as well as with a powerful sense of time and place.

There are over 24 quality control systems recommended for the control and improvement of quality and process; there are over 30 techniques and buzzwords suggested for implementing these systems and to assist in learning about these systems and techniques; there are well over 200 courses, seminars, programs, and conferences available. This book discusses the pros and cons of these many alternatives, suggests how an effective system can be assembled or reconstructed by selecting and combining some basic engineering methods, some non-statistical methods based on team efforts, and seven statistical tools, with computer application assistance. Different requirements of different companies mean there is no one best way to construct or modify a quality system plan. There is no plan that can "fit all sizes." This book presents-in clear and simple terms-the needs, goals, cautions, and suggested procedures you should consider when modifying or constructing an effective system for your company.

‘If you like a great psychological thriller, I promise you that you will love Shattered.’ Amazon Review. DECEPTION. GREED. VENGEANCE. BETRAYAL Forced to Northumberland to care for her dying Aunt, Charley Costin is determined to put aside childhood fears, and a twenty year feud, to prove her family wrong. Elizabeth Kane is not a witch, she is just an old lady, and Charley intends to make her estranged Aunt's last days as comfortable as possible. But doubts creep in when Elizabeth proves more work than Charley ever imagined. Intimidating and demanding, with violent hallucinations, episodes of paranoia, and an agenda of her own, Charley discovers dementia is much more than loss of memory, and her Aunt is as far from 'old lady' as she can get. Already on edge, Charley discovers Fortwind House hides not only a sinister presence, an unruly bell, and a study door that opens itself, but also a terrible secret. A secret that gardener Axl Maddox would kill to keep buried. A secret that Elizabeth is desperate to tell. As her Aunt's paranoia grows, an unnerved Charley questions just how long her Aunt has left, and the real reason she may have less time than she thinks. Disturbed, watched, and afraid, Charley feels out of her depth as over twenty years of deception, betrayal, vengeance, and bad blood rise to the surface with devastating consequences. What Charley discovers at Fortwind House will blow her world apart and challenge everything she has ever known. SHATTERED ‘From the 1st page, I was hooked, and kept finding spare minutes so I could sit and read Shattered, I so wanted it to end, but I didn't want it to finish!!’ Amazon review.

Book Summary:

The Pulitzer Prize-winning tragedy of a salesman’s deferred American dream Ever since it was first performed in 1949, Death of a Salesman has been recognized as a milestone of the American theater. In the person of Willy Loman, the aging, failing salesman who makes his living riding on a smile and a shoeshine, Arthur Miller redefined the tragic hero as a man whose dreams are at once insupportably vast and dangerously insubstantial. He has given us a figure whose name has become a symbol for a kind of majestic grandiosity—and a play that compresses epic extremes of humor and anguish, promise and loss, between the four walls of an American living room. "By common consent, this is one of the finest dramas in the whole range of the American theater." —Brooks Atkinson, The New York Times "So simple, central, and terrible that the run of playwrights would neither care nor dare to attempt it." —Time

Book Summary:

"We must be pretty nearly there now, Tom, I take it!" "I reckon we'll sight the dugout inside of half an hour or so, Felix; if the description, and the little chart old Sol Ten Eyck gave me, are correct." "Well, I'll sure be glad when we arrive, because this pack is getting heavier, it seems to me, every hour now. One thing certain, Chum Tom, we'll go out of this part of the country a heap lighter than we're coming in; with all this good grub swallowed up after two months roughing it. Been three days on the trail now, since Frazer turned us loose out of his big bull-boat." They were two pretty well-grown boys, the one tall and slender; while the other, whom he called Tom, seemed stockily built, with the ruddy hue of perfect health on his sun and wind tanned cheeks. Tom was really Tom Tucker, and the taller young hunter, Felix Edmondson. Besides repeating rifles of a modern make, and such ordinary accompaniments as ditty bags and hunting knives, the lads were carrying heavy packs on their backs, to each of which were also strapped a pair of snow-shoes, proving that they anticipated staying around the foothills of the great Rocky Mountains, for some time at least, and were prepared for getting around when several feet of snow covered the ground. They were in a region not a great distance from the border of that Wonderland which Uncle Sam has transferred into a grand playground, known far and wide as the Yellowstone Park. In fact, a range of the Rocky Mountains towered almost above them as they looked up, standing out against the blue afternoon sky like a rock-ribbed barrier. Around them lay the great forest that in many places grows at the base of the giant uplifts that are well called the back-bone of the continent. It was a wild region, seldom pressed by the foot of man; save when some Indian or trapper chose to pursue his calling—the "primeval wilderness," Felix was fond of calling it, in his humorous way. Felix was a city-bred boy who had ambitions to take up his father's profession later in life, and shine as a surgeon. But not being very strong, it was under this parent's wise advice that he was now knocking off for a year from his studies, and getting in the great Outdoors all he possibly could, in order to build himself up, so as to have a good foundation for the hard work that lay before him. And he was succeeding wonderfully, since there is nothing better under the sun to change a weakly boy into a sturdy man than this free life of the Wild West. If proof of this statement were needed, it could be demonstrated in the life of Theodore Roosevelt himself, who took the same course of treatment. As for Tom Tucker, he had always lived pretty much in the open ever since his father bought that Wyoming cattle range with its herds. Between times Tom had attended school, so that he was far from being ignorant; the fact of his great love of reading also put him in touch with what was going on in the world, whether in the line of scientific discoveries, exploration, or the constant change in the map of nations.

An “extraordinary” novel of five friends coming of age in 1960s New York City, from a New York Times–bestselling, Academy Award–winning author (The Plain Dealer). William Goldman, the versatile author who gave us classic thrillers like Marathon Man, the immortal comedy of The Princess Bride, and the infamous Hollywood tell-all Adventures in the Screen Trade, offers a beautiful and sweeping novel inspired by his own coming-of-age, set against the backdrop of the New York theater world. In Boys and Girls Together, five friends—each of them young, creative, ambitious, and troubled—make their way to Manhattan in pursuit of their dreams. Aaron, the playwright; Walt, the director; Rudy and Jenny, both actors; and Branch, their producer, all come together to struggle, fight, love, create art, and face the hard truths of life. A popular sensation when it was first published in 1964, Boys and Girls Together remains a masterwork of heartbreaking emotional honesty. This ebook features a biography of William Goldman.
